Anyway, yes, it's decidedly different -- something off the beaten path and nothing like any crime fiction I've read before.NancyOhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12027036137062767840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-506358489015565993.post-79448784138430844042012-08-09T09:35:22.833-04:002012-08-09T09:35:22.833-04:00I've been trying to decide whether to give thi...I've been trying to decide whether to give this book a go. And you're right -- if a book is marked YA, the chances are highly likely that I wouldn't read it. How and why books get designated as YA is always interesting. Here's the definition: "YA literature shares the following fundamental elements of the fiction genre: character, plot, setting, theme, and style. However, theme and style are often subordinated to the Welch's Rarebitshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09183345901778644627noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-506358489015565993.post-42040587568782925752012-08-09T08:25:00.770-04:002012-08-09T08:25:00.770-04:00Hi Eric

That's why there are no facebook buttons or twitter or like buttons or anything, although I do have both F & T. And thank you for liking my reviews! Love your reviews. We'll have to have a discussion sometime about the concept of YA novels, which you indicate you don't read. It has always seemed to me the category is hopelessly artificial and its designation dooms a book to the nether world of a group that doesn't buy books while isolating itself from "adults" who Welch's Rarebitshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09183345901778644627noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-506358489015565993.post-86560071055565973942012-08-08T15:04:27.248-04:002012-08-08T15:04:27.248-04:00This one is very different than the usual fare -- ...This one is very different than the usual fare -- and although it's easy to figure out the "who," you just sort of have to ignore it. There are some parts that are just downright haunting, and even if you know nothing about the films mentioned in the novel, it's pretty much all explained. Just keep in mind that it's an unusual take on crime fiction.NancyOhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12027036137062767840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-506358489015565993.post-21396446743840133982012-08-08T14:59:29.170-04:002012-08-08T14:59:29.170-04:00What a great review. I've been on the fence about this one, as I'm not that keen on books about the cinema (good subject but books on it never seem to work, eg one of John Harvey's rare failures) - but your review encourages me to re-think.Maxine Clarkehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06628509319992204770noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-506358489015565993.post-28736211382022576952012-08-08T14:52:21.016-04:002012-08-08T14:52:21.016-04:00oh definitely! I'm doing a lot more reading on the literary side right now (it's the Booker Prize longlist time) and coming back to crime again makes me see things a bit differently than usual. There are quite a number of recent crime reads I've done where the novel demands a different approach. The straight whodunits are fun, but I like variation sometimes!NancyOhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12027036137062767840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-506358489015565993.post-30639452892127821192012-08-08T14:45:54.176-04:002012-08-08T14:45:54.176-04:00Nancy - This really seems interesting.
